#sp4ed reflecting on session 2

Some thoughts on session 2 before I forget them. The overall structure is well thought out and researched however I am feeling the cognitive load ( may be I am doing this as well as my normal activities plus trying to see if I can do this on an iPad which is slowing me down). At present  I am feeling quite overwhelmed with the number of activities I am to cope with. From the readings, personal blog posts, microblog posts and responses. The time allocations for some of the activities are overly optimistic.  For example, I would be hard pushed to respond to the micro blog activity on definitions in 3 mins when I am also trying to respond to the thoughts of other participants.
.. Anyway back to the course....

#sp4ed major event changing education

  • high speed video capable internet will change education because it makes it possible to have students geographically separated communicating in real time. As humans I think we have a basic need to network and through connecting with others get a feeling that we are adding value to our lives and the lives of others.
  • We can make the future happen because as educators we are the gatekeepers and - if we want -innovators who encourage and foster learning in others ( not necessarily students only). We have a fundamental desire to share our knowledge rather than hoard our knowledge (I think we should!!), for this group as you are part of the open education movement I suspect this would be the case.

#SP4Ed first post introducing ...

Hi everyone,

I am an Associate Professor in Information Technology at the Eastern Institute of Technology, in Hawke's Bay (EIT Hawke's Bay), New Zealand, and completed my PhD in 2009. I have a special interest in wikis in teaching and am transferring my wiki content to wikieductor (  http://wikieducator.org/VirtualMV ) any help on my Research in IT paper would be welcome.
I enjoy walking and gardening, and when the opportunity arises a round of golf. I also assist in a Ukulele night held once a month in Napier.

As a face to face teacher I have been exploring the use of Adobe Connect so students can choose to participate either in class or at other locations. So we coined a term

gxLearning: “a geographically distributed class, consisting of students in a face-to-face mode plus students in a remote location”.

and are doing some research around its use.

Looking forward to working and trialing the sp4ed micro-OOK. Am also  going to try to only access it on my iPad to see how this goes :)
